Kambili and Jaja are first surprised by the level of freedom their cousins possess, then they start to embrace it. She creates a very healthy atmosphere for the children under her care and treats them with respect. Unlike the Achike family, Aunty Ifeoma is liberal and encourages openness. When Kambili’s Aunty Ifeoma succeeds in convincing Eugene Achike to allow Kambili and Jaja to spend some time with her in Nsukka, the quiet teenagers experience a new environment that they eventually fall in love with. Her father who is a well-known philanthropist abused every member of his immediate family and they accept it in resignation. She is strongly influenced by her family’s values and beliefs. Although she is exceedingly brilliant, she struggles with an inferiority complex. Raised by a submissive mother and authoritative father, Kambili becomes socially awkward and unreasonably quiet.
